In Photoshop CS5, it’s Window –> Animation. In Photoshop CS6, it’s Window –> Timeline. Now you have your layers, stacked up really nice as gif frames. Later, you’ll find that it’s much easier to work with fewer layers and it’s more organised to have them imported separately, even if it means going to File –> Import –> Video Frames to Layers a few times more. Useful tip: When you’re gifing a whole scene (for example, not just Hermione but the whole potions class scene), you may be tempted to select the entire thing (“From Beginning To End”) and be done with it. You may drag both of them as you like:Ĭhange your settings at the left to this: Now, using those little black... things (what are they called?) mark the area that you want to gif. Open (import) it, and you should have something like this: (If your content is a downloaded video, you may skip the recording process and directly Import the video to Photoshop.)Īs far as I know, VLC always sends the recorded bits to the Videos folder. Now go to Photoshop and File –> Import –> Video Frames to Layers. To be on the safe side, you might want to press the record button a few seconds before you want the actual recording to begin. IMPORTANT: Sometimes, VLC player tends to start recording with delay. Simply press the button whenever you want to start recording, and press it again when your recording is done. Open your movie (if it is a movie and not a downloaded video) on VLC player and get to the part where you want to gif. (I will explain this in a second.) When I want to gif a Youtube video, however, I use to download it. I usually have the HD version of all the films I want to gif, and use VLC player to get the bit I want. If you’d like to view the new tutorial, which I recommend, you can do so here.

This one includes the old method I used, and I got better at making gifs since posting this. Any sort of feedback is appreciated - and let me know if you’d like me to make fancier gif tutorials.)ĮDIT: I’ve made a new and improved gif tutorial. If you find this tutorial useful, please like or reblog it. (Explaining how to make a gif from scratch turned out to be harder than it sounds. And even though this is not a tutorial blog and there are much better gif tutorials on other blogs, I’ve decided to give it a go.
